Religious Identity
Lord Wu Ye, honorific title Guangji Dragon King Bodhisattva, is the most revered folk deity at Mount Wutai. Originally the fifth son of the East Sea Dragon King (Sheng Yan), he was enlightened and converted to Buddhism by Manjushri Bodhisattva, becoming the protector god and wealth deity of Mount Wutai. He is also worshipped as an incarnation of Manjushri, governing wealth, career, health, and safety, known for “granting all prayers”.
Legend & Origin
Lord Wu Ye was once the powerful, forthright fifth son of the Dragon King. When Manjushri Bodhisattva borrowed the Cooling Stone to relieve the people of Mount Wutai from extreme heat, Wu Ye angrily swept the five sharp peaks into flat platforms, forming the modern Mount Wutai. Moved by Manjushri’s compassion, he repented, stayed to protect the sacred site, and was titled Guangji Dragon King Bodhisattva. The Buddha bestowed him three treasures: Gold Ingot, Treasury of Wealth, and Cornucopia, making him the guardian of universal prosperity.
