[ HAND-PAINTED SACRED TSATSA THANGKA | Dzaki Lhamo]
————————————————————
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This hand-painted Tsatsa Thangka features Dzaki Lhamo, rendered in traditional Tibetan Buddhist iconography. Each piece is individually crafted by artisans using mineral pigments.
Religious Identity
In Tibetan Buddhism, Palden Lhamo (Tashi Tseringma / Dzaki Lhamo) is regarded as an earthly emanation of Sri Devi and belongs to the category of worldly protector deities. She has not yet transcended the cycle of existence and continues to accumulate merit. As both a Dharma protector and a renowned female goddess of wealth, she receives devotee offerings at Tashi Kyil Monastery in Lhasa.
Legendary Origin
Legend has it that Dzaki Lhamo was originally a young and beautiful imperial consort from inland China. She was murdered out of jealousy, and her spirit followed a high Tibetan lama to Tibet for spiritual practice. The lama built a dwelling for her near Sera Monastery and named her Dzaki Lhamo, meaning “the goddess of the place Dzaki.”
Iconographic Features
Her iconography is highly distinctive, usually depicted in a wrathful form: her face is dark, eyes wide open, tongue protruding, and feet shaped like chicken claws—hence her nickname “Chicken-Claw Goddess.” This form originates from the legend that she was poisoned, forcing her tongue out, and her feet were replaced with chicken claws after being maimed, symbolizing enlightenment attained through great suffering.
Religious Symbolism and Blessing Functions
Core Symbolism
Dzaki Lhamo symbolizes wealth, peace, health and courage. Holding a sacred staff of auspiciousness, she represents the bestowal of happiness and good fortune. Her Thangka imagery is also commonly associated with attracting wealth, warding off disasters and resolving difficulties.
Blessing Functions
Devotees believe that worshipping Dzaki Lhamo can grant both legitimate and windfall wealth. She is also revered for prayers concerning fertility, healing and safety. In Tibetan regions, she is regarded as the guardian of commercial prosperity and abundant financial fortune.
Auspicious Day for Worship
Every Wednesday is considered the auspicious day to pray to Dzaki Lhamo. Devotees often visit Tashi Kyil Monastery on this day with offerings such as liquor and khata scarves, reciting mantras to strengthen their prayers.
